8. Baptism announcement vs invitation: what’s the difference?

An invitation uses future tense and asks people to attend: "We invite you to the baptism…". An announcement uses past tense and informs people the baptism took place: "We are delighted to announce that [Baby] was baptized on [Date]". Use announcements for private ceremonies, distant family, or after the fact.

9. When to send baptism invitations (timing rules)

Mail printed invitations 4 to 6 weeks before the ceremony. Send digital invitations 3 to 5 weeks ahead. For destination baptisms or major holiday weekends, allow 8 to 10 weeks. RSVP deadline: 14 days before the baptism.

10. How to address baptism invitation envelopes

  • Use full names, no abbreviations (write "Doctor" or "Reverend" in full)
  • For couples: "Mr. and Mrs. James Carter" or "James and Sarah Carter"
  • For unmarried couples living together: list each name on its own line
  • Include children’s names if invited: "James and Sarah Carter and family"
  • Use stamped, hand-addressed envelopes for the warmest tone

Frequently asked questions

Catholic baptism wording typically includes a religious reference at the top (a scripture verse or "Through the waters of baptism"), the baby’s full name, parents’ names, godparents’ names (optional), date, time, church name and address, and reception details.

An invitation asks people to attend. An announcement tells them the baptism has happened (often used for distant family or private ceremonies). Announcement wording uses past tense.

It is optional. Including godparents’ names is more common in traditional Catholic and Orthodox communities. Modern minimalist invitations often omit them. There is no etiquette rule against either choice.

The wording structure is identical; only the pronoun and possibly the color/design change. Some families use gender-specific scripture or family quotes, but this is purely stylistic.

Include both names prominently, often joined with "&". The rest of the invitation matches a single-baby format: parents, date, location, reception. Example: "With grateful hearts, we invite you to celebrate the baptism of Emma & Olivia Carter."
